As of May 2026, the rupiah has hit around Rp17,700 per USD and for families planning to send their kids abroad, the math is getting painful. Studying in the US, for example, now costs Rp708 million to Rp1.5 billion per year once you factor in tuition, rent, food, and transport.
The bigger problem isn't the number itself. It's that the number keeps moving. The rupiah has weakened an average of 3–4% per year over the past two decades. Add 3–5% annual tuition inflation in destination countries, and the real cost of studying abroad for Indonesian families rises 6–9% per year in Rupiah terms before you've even booked a flight.
As The Jakarta Post reported, one Indonesian parent financing her child's degree in Italy put it plainly: every expense tuition, rent, daily costs is paid in foreign currency. When the rupiah drops, everything gets more expensive overnight.
